PICA After Dark: Soul Alphabet Takeover

Left: Yoshi, Right: K Da Brat

This event is taking place on Whadjuk Country. We would like to take this opportunity to pay our respects to Elders past, present and emerging and to all the First Nations peoples. We acknowledge tens of thousands of years of stories, traditions and living cultures of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples on this land and commit to building a brighter future together. We extend solidarity and hope for a future where all are afforded justice, dignity, and peace, reflecting on centuries of resistance. This always was and always will be Aboriginal land.

On Friday, 24 Nov, Soul Alphabet will take over PICA's sound system, and we are incredibly grateful for this invitation. Come through from 5pm to dance and converse with Roberta Joy Rich’s work. DJ sets from Yoshi  🇿🇦 and K Da Brat 🇳🇬.

Roberta Joy Rich, The Purple Shall Govern.

Roberta Joy Rich - The Purple Shall Govern | Open at PICA till 31 Dec

‘The Purple Shall Govern’ discusses a critical moment in South Africa’s anti-apartheid protest history. Through audio recordings, you hear conversations about the conditions of South Africa under apartheid. The divisively racist and violent living conditions are spoken about extensively through Rich’s family archives, from the identity cards on display to recorded conversations with elders. Parallels between South African and Australian histories of racism, colonisation and apartheid are highlighted. Powerfully, the work also criticises the realities of leaders who forget about the intersectionalities of struggles, especially Indigenous struggles across the globe. Histories of archives, art institutions, media, storytelling, and memory expand in this work. This exhibition is a library of knowledge.
